Number of Rakats in Salat or Namaz

Salat is the obligatory Muslim prayers. It is performed five times each day by Muslims. It is the second pillar of Islam. Muslims must perform wadu (washing) to be clean before they pray.

Salat al-fajr: dawn, before sunrise:
i) First two rakat Sunnat Mokadda
ii) Two rakat Fard

Salat al-zuhr: midday, after the sun passes its highest:
i) Four rakat Sunnat Mokadda
ii) Four rakat Fard
iii) Two rakat sunnat Mokadda
iv) Two rakat Nafl (Optional but spiritually beneficial)

Salat al-‘asr: the late part of the afternoon Asr:
i) Four rakat sunnat ghair mokadda (Optional but spiritually beneficial)
ii) Four rakat Fard

Salat al-maghrib: just after sunset
i) Three rakat Fard
ii) Two rakat Sunnat Mokadda
iii) Two rakat nafl (Optional but spiritually beneficial)

Salat al-‘isha: between sunset and midnight
i) Four rakat sunnat e Ghair Mokadda (Optional but spiritually beneficial)
ii) Four rakat Fard
iii) Two Rakat Sunnat Mokadda
iv) Two rakat Nafil (Optional but spiritually beneficial)
v) Three rakat Wajib
vi) Two rakat Nafil (Optional but spiritually beneficial)
